We were recalling the days of Band Camps, SYF Band Competitions, weekly band practices and foot drills (yes, yours truly was a sergeant in the band, mind you.) It was a special bond that held us together, and we were almost like a family, under the guidance of Mr Tan.
From what I remember, he was a strong, fatherly figure who gave us nothing less than great care and a strong passion in music. Come to think of it, we probably couldn't have made such good music without him. He was special, and he taught us so much about believing in ourselves and our abilities.
When I heard of his passing, the first thing that came to my mind was what an angel he was. He gave me the gift of music, and taught me the importance of achieving great things through being part of a wonderful team.
For that, I thank you, Mr Tan. You will always be in the hearts of your students, and we carry a part of you in us.
Mr Tan and me, just before the band took off for a Perth trip I didn't join in..probably one of the last few times we met.
